Arizona Oversize Permits
Legal size/weight limits, escort thresholds, travel restrictions, and permit office contact for Arizona.
These figures are a reference summary of publicly published state rules, not a substitute for a state-issued permit and not legal advice. - 57.5ft
- Max overall combination length

A.R.S. 28-1094: without a permit a vehicle unladen or with load may not exceed 13 ft 6 in (162 in). ADOT and local authorities separately DESIGNATE a system of highways on which 14 ft (168 in) may be operated without a permit, and special permits may be issued for laden heights up to 14 ft. The figure shown is the statewide non-permit limit; the 14 ft allowance is route-specific.

A.R.S. 28-1095: 57 ft 6 in semitrailer, but effectively NATIONAL-NETWORK-ONLY. Off-network a 65 ft overall cap applies — and that cap itself only bites once the trailer exceeds 53 ft — which makes 57 ft 6 in unachievable behind a typical tractor off the NN. Doubly conditional on road class AND trailer length. No ADOT page states a single legal maximum.
Escort / Pilot Car Thresholds (see glossary for terms, certification requirements for the driver)
- Front escort required over
- 14ft wide
- Rear escort required over
- 11ft wide
- Both escorts required over
- 14ft wide
- Height escort required over
- 15ft tall
Arizona statewide default escort-by-dimension rule (A.A.C. R17-6-401/402/404): over 11 to 14 ft wide = REAR escort; over 14 to 16 ft wide = FRONT AND REAR escort; over 15 ft high = FRONT escort with a height pole. Overhang (R17-6-307): front overhang over 20 ft = front escort; rear overhang over 20 ft = rear escort; both = front and rear. No width-only 'front escort' tier exists (front escort by width triggered only within the front+rear pair at over 14 ft). Law-enforcement escorts required where R17-6-412 Table 4 specifies, or at Department discretion (R17-6-306); DPS must be contacted at least 12 hours before transport. Route-specific Table 4 rules frequently require escorts at LOWER widths than the statewide default, so the actual requirement is the greater of the statewide rule and any Table 4 route rule. Over 16 ft wide or high moves into Class C special-permit territory. Not weight-tied.
Travel Restrictions
- Night travel
- Generally allowed
- Weekend travel
- Generally allowed
- Sunday travel
- Generally allowed
Loads within the continuous-travel envelope (<=10 ft wide, <=14'6" high, <=120 ft long, <=250,000 lbs, overhangs <=10 ft) may travel continuously incl. nights/weekends (R17-6-401.A). Loads EXCEEDING 10 ft width or 14'6" height must move DAYLIGHT ONLY (R17-6-401.B) unless granted night/weekend transport. Night & weekend transport (R17-6-402) allowed for loads over 10 to 16 ft wide or over 14'6" to 16 ft high on Department-authorized Table 4 routes on any non-holiday night/weekend, from no earlier than 3:00 a.m. until one-half hour after sunset. Metro curfews (Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma) apply Mon-Fri 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 4:00-6:00 p.m. on listed routes.
Holiday blackouts: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.
Superload Thresholds
- Width over
- 14ft
- Height over
- 16ft
- Length over
- 120ft
- Weight over
- 250,000 lbs
Arizona does not use the term 'superload'; the equivalent is a Class C special permit, required for a non-reducible load exceeding the Class A / envelope maximums: more than 250,000 lbs gross, more than 120 ft overall length, more than 16 ft (192 in) height, or more than 14 ft (168 in) width (ADOT Class C page; A.A.C. R17-6-212). Envelope/Class A ceiling is 250,000 lbs, 14 ft wide, 16 ft high, 120 ft long, with at least four axles.
Estimated Permit Cost Current
Class A: $15 (dimensions) / $75 (weight); Class C: $30–$100 tiered

Permit fee only — does not include escort/pilot-car service costs (market-rate, arranged separately) or third-party permit-service fees. This is an estimate for planning purposes, not a quote.
