DCMR Title 18, Chapter 25 (Size, Weight, Construction and Loading of Vehicles): a vehicle higher than 13 ft 6 in (162 in) including load requires an Oversize/Overweight permit to travel in the District. ⚠️ An annual tag is not sufficient — dump trucks, cement mixers, trash trucks and tractor-trailers holding an annual tag must still obtain a SINGLE-HAUL permit for every individual trip over 13 ft 6 in.

⚠️ DC is BELOW the federal minimum off five named road segments, and storing it like a normal state is wrong. DDOT's headline 55 ft is an OVERALL COMBINATION figure, not a trailer figure — that is what we now store. The 48 ft semitrailer allowance exists ONLY on the five routes listed in DCMR 18-2511.2; elsewhere in the District there is no separate trailer number at all and the 55 ft overall governs. A kingpin-to-rear-axle exemption of 41 ft or less sits at 18-2502.11. Our previous 40 ft figure corresponded to nothing in DC law.

This jurisdiction does not publish statewide escort thresholds — requirements are set as conditions on each individual permit. The figures below are the best available secondary-source indication, not the regulation. You must confirm with the permit office before dispatching.

DC requires a POLICE (Metropolitan Police Dept / MPD) escort for any vehicle+load that is: >=75 ft total length; >=12 ft wide; over 13 ft 6 in high; total gross weight >=120,000 lbs; or carrying Class 1 Explosives. DDOT recommends operators also hire private Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operators (P/EVOs); TOPS auto-notifies MPD, and MPD's Motor Carrier Safety Unit confirms whether MPD escorts supplement the P/EVOs. DC does not publish front/rear civilian-escort width tiers; escort is police-based.

Official DDOT FAQ does not publish general curfew/night/weekend/holiday timing; routes are confirmed by DDOT based on size and weight and stated on the permit. Single-trip permits (not annual tags) are required when total length >70 ft, height >13'6", or width >8'6".

Holiday blackouts: Major US holidays. Presidential inauguration and large federal events may close routes.
