O.C.G.A. 32-6-22: no vehicle unladen or with load shall exceed a height of 13 ft 6 in (162 in), except as authorized by permit or for certain vehicles on interstate highways.

O.C.G.A. 32-6-24: the 100 ft is a LEGAL overall-length cap that applies only on roads OTHER than the Interstate and the NHS. On the Interstate/NHS there is no statutory overall limit for a tractor-semitrailer and the binding number is the 53 ft semitrailer. ⚠️ It is also NOT a permit ceiling — GDOT issues permits above 100 ft (over 100 ft simply triggers a route-submission requirement). ⚠️ GDOT's own OversizePermits page describes the 100 ft as if it applied TO the Interstate/NHS, which is the opposite of the statute.

Escort / Pilot Car Thresholds (see glossary for terms, certification requirements for the driver)

These escort figures are route-dependent — they can change with road classification, lane width, two-lane vs multilane, and time of day. Confirm with the permit office before dispatching.

Front escort required over: 12ft wide
Rear escort required over: 12ft wide
Both escorts required over: 14.7ft wide
Height escort required over: 15.5ft tall

Per GDOT Rule 672-2: Width >12'-14'8" = front escort + rear escort/amber on 2-lane; rear escort on 4-lane; rear escort/amber on limited-access/interstate. Width >14'8"-16' = front + rear escort on 2-lane; rear escort on limited-access. Width >16' = case-by-case, may require police escort with blue lights. Height >=15'6" = front escort with height sensor (unless NJUNS approval). Length 75'-100' = rear escort/amber; >100'-125' = rear escort; >125' = front + rear escort.

Weekend travel: Generally allowed
Sunday travel: Generally allowed

Over-dimension loads move daylight only (30 min after sunrise to 30 min before sunset). Overweight-only loads within legal dimensions and <125,000 lbs may move continuously (incl. night/weekend). No movement 6-9 a.m. & 4-6 p.m. Mon-Fri inside I-285 (metro Atlanta). No movement during fog, snow or icy conditions.

Holiday blackouts: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas (plus all inclement-weather periods).

GDOT Superload (single) = non-divisible load with width or height greater than 16' and/or GVW 150,001-180,000 lbs (up to 3 business-day approval). Superload Plus = over 180,000 lbs, requires bridge analysis (up to 3 weeks). Length is not part of GA's superload definition.
