23 V.S.A. § 1431 (Height and width limits): motor vehicles and loads shall not exceed 13 ft 6 in (162 in) in height, nor 8 ft 6 in in width. A landowner whose land is divided by a public highway may move an unregistered vehicle over 13 ft 6 in across the highway with the appropriate permit.

HARD road-class split. 23 V.S.A. 1432(e): on the Interstate system and designated qualifying Federal-aid Primary highways, "no overall length limits for tractor-semitrailer ... shall apply", and on those highways no semitrailer longer than 53 ft may be operated. OFF that network the rig must fit inside 75 ft OVERALL — a long-wheelbase sleeper tractor plus a 53 ft trailer can easily breach that. Publishing Vermont's 75 ft alongside other states' TRAILER numbers would put an illegal rig on a Vermont state highway. Off-NN there is no separate trailer cap; you are bounded by the 75 ft overall plus a 41 ft KPRA. Single vehicle (no trailer) capped at 46 ft. ⚠️ Any reference carrying 68 ft for Vermont is STALE — 1432(a)(1) was amended by 2021 No. 55 s.10 effective 1 July 2022 and now reads 75 ft. Note 23 V.S.A. 1431 is height and width only; length lives in 1432.

These escort figures are route-dependent — they can change with road classification, lane width, two-lane vs multilane, and time of day. Confirm with the permit office before dispatching.

Per VT DMV CVO-110 rules: escort vehicles required when load meets or exceeds 12 ft wide (144 in), 80 ft long, or 15 ft overhang (or at Commissioner's discretion). One escort leads on undivided highways and follows on divided highways. Commissioner may require two or more escorts. POLICE ESCORT may be required at the Commissioner's discretion for movements requiring special traffic control. Height is not a listed escort trigger (over-height instead triggers an Engineering Inspection at over 14 ft).

Over-dimension loads (over width/length/height) restricted to daylight: 30 min before sunrise to 30 min after sunset. Overweight-only loads that can keep with traffic flow are NOT restricted to daylight. Saturday/Sunday travel is allowed EXCEPT loads over 108,000 lbs, over 12 ft wide, or over 100 ft long are prohibited on Saturdays and Sundays. Speed capped at 45 mph on state highways for loads over 90,000 lbs / 10 ft wide / 13 ft 6 in high / 75 ft long.

Holiday blackouts: Loads over 108,000 lbs, over 12 ft wide, or over 100 ft long prohibited on: New Year's Day (Jan 1), Memorial Day (last Mon May), Independence Day (Jul 4), Labor Day (1st Mon Sep), Thanksgiving (4th Thu Nov), Christmas (Dec 25). Commissioner may add before/after-holiday restrictions.

Superload Thresholds

An Engineering Inspection (Vermont's superload review) is required when a load meets/exceeds 15 ft wide, more than 100 ft long, more than 14 ft high, or 150,000 lbs or more (except on town highways). Takes up to 10 working days; valid 6 months for equal/lesser loads. superload_height_in of 168 represents the 'more than 14 ft' trigger.
