Oversize Load Travel Days, Curfews & Holiday Blackouts by State

When can you legally move an oversize or overweight load? Night, weekend, and Sunday travel rules plus holiday blackout dates for every U.S. state and Canadian province — side by side.

Home › Travel Restrictions by State

“Allowed” / “Restricted” reflect each state's general rule for permitted oversize loads — the exact cutoffs (by width, height, or route) and the full holiday list are on each state's page. Superloads and the largest dimensions almost always face the tightest curfews. Always confirm the conditions printed on your actual permit before you travel.

Understanding oversize travel restrictions

Daylight / night travel. Most states limit oversize moves to daylight hours — often 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset — because oversize loads are harder to see and harder for other traffic to pass safely at night. Some states allow night travel for narrower loads or with additional escorts.

Weekend & Sunday travel. Many states restrict or prohibit oversize travel on Sundays, and some on Saturdays, to reduce conflict with weekend traffic. The rule frequently tightens as the load gets wider or taller.

Holiday blackouts. Nearly every state prohibits oversize travel on major holidays — and often the days around them — when traffic peaks. The exact blackout dates vary by state and change year to year; the list on each state's page reflects the most recently verified schedule.

Metro & rush-hour curfews. Beyond statewide rules, individual metro areas and specific routes often add their own rush-hour or route-specific curfews that a statewide table can't capture — another reason to confirm the exact conditions on your issued permit.

Reference only. Travel restrictions change without notice and depend on your load's exact size, route, and the conditions written on your permit. This table is a planning aid, not legal authorization to move — always follow the curfew and travel conditions printed on your issued state permit.
