Planning a multi-state oversize move
A move that crosses several states is really several permits and rule sets stitched together. Here is a repeatable way to plan one.
- Confirm the load is oversize. Measure width, height, length, and gross weight, and check them against legal limits with the Permit & Escort Checker.
- Check every state on the route. Permits, escort thresholds, and travel windows are set per state — use the checker's "compare all states" table and the Permit Requirements by State pages.
- Plan a truck-legal route. Use the Route Planner to screen bridges (clearance and weight) and construction, then hand the route to your phone or in-cab GPS.
- Line up escorts. Book certified pilot cars for the states that require them from the Escort directory.
- Pull a permit in each state or province. Permits are not transferable across borders; apply early for superloads.
- Match your travel windows. Reconcile each state's daylight, curfew, and holiday rules with the Travel Restrictions tool so the whole trip is legal end to end.
Every state's rules differ and change. Use these tools to plan, then confirm with each issuing DOT and carry the actual permits.
